[DISABILITY IS NO BARRIER TO FRIENDSHIP]

Recreation and Peer Support organises group social and recreational activities that enable friendship and peer support between our members, who are adults, aged 18 to 65, have a physical and/or sensory disability, and live in the inner-west suburbs of Sydney.

The activities take place in our local communities, and focus on friendship and social interaction among our members, staff, and volunteers. The activities are supported by raps staff members and volunteers, and include going to the movies, caf nights, daytrips, ten pin bowling, DVD nights, and weekend activities. We hold quarterly activity planning BBQs to get feedback from our members and ensure that they are engaged in choosing the range of activities we offer.

raps is a not-for-profit organisation, which was started by people with a disability over 20 years ago. raps receives funding through the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program which is administered by the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability, and Home Care in NSW.

Our vision — “disability is no barrier to friendship” — is the guiding principle of our organisation, and it is our aim to act in ways that make this a reality. Our mission is to use recreational and social group activities to enable friendships between our members with physical and sensory disabilities. By organising these activities we present our members with opportunities to be socially active and less isolated. They also create a peer support environment, and provide for our members the shared experiences from which friendships can grow.
